UPDATE I gave a 1 star review a few years ago ... and they deserved it . Now something has changed because the food is good the servers are much improved and the consistency has completely changed. So I am too 4 stars now. The last 3 times I've ordered out or eaten in over the last 3 months they have much Better!
This place was pretty good right when it opened. Now it has gone down hill. Went for quick date night dinner and couldn't have been more disappointed with the food. The server was good, but tasteless everything from the salad to the miso
:(
My husband doesn't really like sushi like I do so he ordered sweet & sour chickenit was terrible! No flavor- even the rice was just not good. We will not be back. -

We've been coming here for years. I have to say we've never had a bad experience. The sushi is consistently good and the staff treats us like old friends. The menu is diverse for those that don't want sushi and they have great little booths if you need a little privacy.
Tonight they had Hamachi belly and it was excellent. We love taking our kids and having family dinner. It's great for groups or if you just want an intimate dinner with your cute partner. -

After reading the reviews of happy sumo I really wasn't sure what I would get. Literally 5 stars or 1 star with many mentioning service as the main issue (this is 100% true). Both the blonde "hostess" who I later found out was the manager and my waitress both had major RBF vibes. The exception here was my sushi chef Brow who was very nice and accommodating especially since I augmented a roll to cut the crab salad and add cucumber instead (very appreciated).
I toggled between a 2 and 3 for this review and settled on a 2 because aside from the service the sushi quality was equivalent to Whole Foods or the sushi in terminal 3 of SFO. I'm sorry but standardly you need to be above grocery store food quality as a dedicated sushi restaurant. That being said I love Whole Foods sushi.
Closing remarks are on the rice, one review noted that it was hard/ seemed undercooked. I agree with this sentiment, although I physically picked rice off my roll to determine if this was true, and surprisingly the rice was cooked. All I can really say is that it was the consistency of Thai sticky rice that was forced into masquerading as sushi rice.
I would come back for one reason only: since work is paying and it's walking distance from my hotel. -

We love the sushi here as well as the Sunomono. It has a very comfortable quiet setting so that you can have a conversation with your companion/wife/friends.
We usually have the onion crunch and salmon lover sushi -

We ordered happy sumo from Grubhub and I'm disgusted. I don't know if this was an early April fools joke but the chicken was rubber. Literally tasted like rubber, covered in teriyaki sauce. I get having the food cold since we did grubhub but hot damn was that ice cold. If you want to throw your money away I'd suggest grabbing their "chicken" teriyaki and what they want to call a Vegas roll. The only edible part was the tempura, thank the gods for that.
